A dental emergency is any situation involving severe pain, uncontrolled bleeding, swelling, trauma to the teeth or jaw, or a lost tooth. At Family First Smiles in Leesburg, VA, we reserve time in our daily schedule specifically for emergency patients — because when you are in pain, waiting is not an option.
Common emergencies we treat include: severe toothaches, knocked-out or partially displaced teeth, cracked or fractured teeth, lost fillings or crowns, dental abscesses (infection with swelling), and soft-tissue injuries to the gums, lips, or cheeks. No matter what you are experiencing, call us first at (703) 777-1515 and our team will walk you through the next steps immediately.
A knocked-out (avulsed) tooth has the best chance of survival when replanted within 30–60 minutes. Follow these steps: Pick up the tooth by the crown — never the root. If dirty, gently rinse with clean water; do not scrub or use soap. If possible, gently reinsert it into the socket and bite on a clean cloth. If not, store it in milk or between your cheek and gum. Call us immediately at (703) 777-1515 and head straight to our Leesburg office.
A severe, persistent toothache often means a deep infection or abscess that requires urgent care. Rinse with warm salt water, take OTC pain medication as directed, and call our office. Never place aspirin directly on the gum — it can cause chemical burns. Abscesses (visible swelling or a pimple-like bump on the gum) can spread rapidly and should be treated the same day.
Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Save any broken fragments in milk. For a lost crown, pharmacy dental cement can temporarily re-attach it. Call us right away — leaving the tooth unprotected leads to sensitivity, further fracture, and risk of infection that makes treatment more complex.
