Finding a quality dental office in Leesburg that accepts Virginia Medicaid can be frustrating — many practices either do not participate or treat Medicaid patients as second-tier. At Family First Smiles, that is simply not how we operate. Dr. Ahmed Al Attar, D.D.S. and our entire team are deeply committed to providing every patient — regardless of insurance status or income — with the same high standard of compassionate, comprehensive dental care.
We have accepted Virginia Medicaid (DMAS) for decades, and we actively work to ensure Medicaid patients receive timely appointments, thorough examinations, and access to the full range of covered services. If you or a family member have Virginia Medicaid and need a dental home in Loudoun County, please call us at (703) 777-1515 — we would be honored to care for you.
Virginia Medicaid dental coverage is administered through the Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS) and differs significantly between pediatric (children's) and adult coverage. Understanding what is covered helps you make the most of your benefits and avoid unexpected costs.
Virginia's Smiles for Children program provides comprehensive dental coverage for children enrolled in FAMIS (Family Access to Medical Insurance Security) and Medicaid. Covered services typically include: comprehensive oral exams and recall exams, full-mouth X-rays and bite-wing X-rays, professional cleanings (prophylaxis), fluoride varnish applications, dental sealants on permanent molars, tooth-colored and amalgam fillings, stainless steel crowns, tooth extractions, space maintainers, and emergency dental treatment. Orthodontic treatment may be covered in cases of severe malocclusion or medically necessary correction.
Early dental visits are strongly encouraged. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a child's first dental appointment by their first birthday or within six months of the first tooth erupting — and Smiles for Children covers that visit completely.
Adult Medicaid dental coverage in Virginia is more limited than pediatric coverage and has changed over the years. Currently, the covered adult dental services through DMAS include emergency extractions, medically necessary oral surgery, and certain emergency-basis restorative services. Routine cleanings, exams, and elective restorations may have limited or no coverage for adults depending on your specific Medicaid plan type and eligibility category.
We strongly encourage adult Medicaid patients to call our office before scheduling so we can verify your specific eligibility and coverage. Our front desk team will let you know exactly what is covered under your plan and discuss any out-of-pocket costs upfront. For uncovered services, we offer in-house payment plans and CareCredit financing.
Many Virginia Medicaid patients receive their benefits through a managed care organization (MCO) such as Aetna Better Health, Anthem HealthKeepers Plus, Molina Complete Care, or Virginia Premier. If you are enrolled in a Medicaid managed care plan, your dental benefits may be managed separately by the MCO's dental contractor. Please bring your MCO member ID card (not just your Medicaid card) when you call or come in, so we can verify your specific benefits accurately.
Scheduling your Medicaid dental appointment is simple. Call our office at (703) 777-1515 Monday through Friday during business hours and let our front desk team know you have Virginia Medicaid. Have your Medicaid ID card or MCO member ID card ready. We will verify your eligibility on the spot and schedule your appointment — often within the same week.
If you are scheduling for your child, we will verify their Smiles for Children eligibility and let you know what to bring for the first visit. For new pediatric patients, we recommend scheduling around or before the first birthday for a "baby teeth checkup" — it is completely covered and sets the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles.
Please bring your Virginia Medicaid ID card or MCO member card, a valid government-issued photo ID (for adult patients), a list of current medications, and completed new patient forms if you called ahead to have them emailed in advance. If you are bringing a child, a parent or legal guardian must be present to sign consent forms.
If you are in the process of applying for Virginia Medicaid and have an urgent or painful dental need, please call us. We will discuss all available options — including emergency care and our in-house payment plan — while your application is being processed. We will not make you wait for care if we can help it.
Our Medicaid patients come to us because they know they will be treated with dignity, seen on time, and given honest, expert clinical guidance — not a lesser version of care. Dr. Al Attar brings the same clinical standards, modern equipment, and personal attention to every Medicaid appointment that he brings to all other patient visits.
We also make scheduling convenient. We maintain appointment slots specifically for Medicaid patients, including same-day slots for dental emergencies. If a child or adult Medicaid patient calls with pain, swelling, or a broken tooth, we do our very best to see them the same day. Call (703) 777-1515 and describe your situation — we will find a way to help.

Yes — we accept Smiles for Children (Virginia's pediatric Medicaid dental program) and FAMIS for patients of all ages, from infants through adolescents. We encourage parents to schedule their child's first dental visit by age one, as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry — a visit that is fully covered under Smiles for Children.
For children enrolled in Smiles for Children, routine cleanings, exams, and X-rays are typically covered at 100%. For adult Medicaid patients, coverage varies by plan type. Call our office at (703) 777-1515 with your Medicaid ID and we will verify your specific benefits before your appointment.
We maintain open appointment slots for new Medicaid patients and typically schedule within the same week for routine care. For dental emergencies, same-day appointments are available. Call (703) 777-1515 as early in the day as possible if you have an urgent need.
It may affect which dental services are covered and at what level, since some MCOs manage dental benefits separately. Please bring your MCO member card when you call — the plan name and member ID on that card allow us to verify your dental benefits specifically, rather than just your base Medicaid eligibility.
If you need a service that is not covered under your Medicaid plan, we will let you know upfront and explain your options — including our in-house payment plan, CareCredit financing, or adjusted self-pay pricing. We never proceed with non-covered treatment without your informed consent and a clear discussion of costs.
Call with the name of your dental plan and ask the office to verify eligibility and benefits for the proposed visit. Acceptance of Medicaid does not mean every service is covered. Ask about any authorization and possible out-of-pocket costs before treatment.
Request an individual estimate after your evaluation. Ask what is included, which insurance benefits have been confirmed and what balance you would pay. Payment plans are available; ask the team about terms.
