New Patient Information — Family First Smiles

Welcome to Family First Smiles. Here is everything you need to prepare for your first dental visit with Dr. Ahmed Al Attar, D.D.S. in Leesburg, Virginia.

Welcome to Family First Smiles

We are so glad you chose Family First Smiles as your dental home in Leesburg, Virginia. Whether you are coming in for a routine cleaning, addressing a dental concern, or bringing your child to their very first appointment, our goal is to make you feel completely comfortable, informed, and well cared for from the moment you walk through our doors.

Led by Dr. Ahmed Al Attar, D.D.S., our team has served families throughout Loudoun County for over 21 years. We believe that exceptional dental care goes hand in hand with genuine compassion — which is why every new patient receives our full attention, a thorough clinical examination, and an honest, pressure-free discussion of their dental health and options.

This page explains everything you need to know to prepare for your first visit: what to bring, what will happen at your appointment, and how insurance, Medicaid, and payment options work at our practice.

What to Bring to Your First Appointment

To ensure your first visit goes smoothly and your insurance benefits are verified before you sit down with Dr. Al Attar, please arrive 10–15 minutes early and bring the following items.

For Adult Patients

Bring a valid government-issued photo ID (driver's license, passport, or state ID), your dental insurance card or Medicaid ID number, a complete list of current prescription medications and supplements (including dosage), and the name and phone number of your previous dentist if you would like us to request prior X-ray records. If you have completed your new patient forms at home (call us to have them emailed in advance), please bring those as well.

For Children and Pediatric Patients

If you are a parent or guardian bringing a child, please bring the child's dental or medical insurance card, their Virginia Medicaid ID (if applicable), a list of any medications or known allergies, and the child's pediatrician's contact information. For children under 18, a parent or legal guardian must be present to sign consent forms. Our team is experienced with young patients of all ages — from toddlers to teenagers — and we know how to make kids feel at ease.

For Patients Without Insurance

No insurance? No problem. Family First Smiles offers CareCredit financing, in-house payment plans, and discounted fees for patients paying out of pocket. Please let our front desk know when you schedule, and we will walk you through all available options before your appointment so there are no surprises.

Your Comprehensive First Examination

Your first appointment at Family First Smiles is a complete, head-to-toe evaluation of your oral health — not a rushed check-in. Dr. Al Attar invests time in getting to know you, understanding your dental history, and establishing an accurate baseline for your ongoing care.

Digital X-Rays and Oral Examination

We use state-of-the-art digital X-ray technology that emits up to 80% less radiation than traditional film X-rays. These images allow Dr. Al Attar to detect issues that are invisible to the naked eye, including decay between teeth, bone loss, impacted wisdom teeth, and infections forming beneath the gum line. Following X-rays, Dr. Al Attar performs a thorough visual and tactile examination of every tooth, your bite alignment, your jaw joints (TMJ), and the soft tissues of your mouth.

Periodontal (Gum) Assessment

Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults — and most people have no idea they have it until significant damage has occurred. During your first visit, our hygienist will measure the depth of the pockets between your gums and teeth at multiple points around every tooth. Pocket depths greater than 3mm indicate inflammation or early disease. This baseline measurement guides our hygiene recommendation — whether a standard cleaning or a deeper periodontal therapy — and provides a benchmark we track at every future visit.

Oral Cancer Screening

Every new patient receives a thorough oral cancer screening at no additional charge. Dr. Al Attar examines your lips, tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, palate, and throat for any irregular tissue changes, lesions, or discolorations that may require further evaluation. Oral cancer is highly treatable when caught early — one of the most important reasons to maintain regular dental visits.

Your Personalized Treatment Plan

After the examination, Dr. Al Attar will sit down with you and walk through his findings clearly and honestly. If any treatment is recommended, he will explain exactly what is needed, why it matters, what happens if it is deferred, and what each procedure costs. We will run your insurance benefits before discussing financials so you always know your out-of-pocket responsibility up front. You will never be pressured to commit to anything on the spot. Our goal is to give you the information to make confident, informed decisions about your care.

Insurance, Medicaid & Payment Options

Family First Smiles accepts most major dental insurance plans including Delta Dental, Cigna, MetLife, Aetna, Guardian, Humana, and United Healthcare. We also accept Virginia Medicaid (DMAS) for eligible children and adults, and we are proud CareCredit providers. For patients without coverage, our in-house patient coordinator will create a payment arrangement that works within your budget.

Our front desk team conducts a thorough benefits verification before your appointment and provides you with a written cost estimate for any recommended treatment. We handle all insurance billing and claim follow-up so you never have to manage that paperwork yourself. Call (703) 777-1515 with any insurance or billing questions — we are happy to help before your visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will my first appointment take?

Plan for approximately 60–90 minutes for your first visit. This includes check-in, X-rays, a comprehensive oral examination by Dr. Al Attar, a periodontal assessment, a professional cleaning (if your gum health permits), and a review of findings and treatment options. We want to give your appointment the time it deserves, not rush you through.

Can I bring my whole family on the same day?

Absolutely. We welcome family scheduling and can often book multiple family members on the same day or at back-to-back appointment times to minimize your trips to the office. Let our front desk know when you call and we will do our best to accommodate everyone together.

Do I need to bring X-rays from my previous dentist?

It is helpful but not required. If you have recent X-rays (within 12–18 months), we may be able to use those and avoid unnecessary re-exposure. If not, we will take a full set of digital X-rays in-house. You can request your records from your previous dentist and bring them with you, or we can submit a records release request on your behalf.

What if I have dental anxiety?

You are in the right place. Dr. Al Attar and our team have extensive experience with anxious and phobic patients. We take a gentle, patient, go-at-your-own-pace approach and always explain each step before we proceed. Please tell us about your anxiety when you call — we will note it in your chart and take extra steps to make your visit comfortable.

Is parking available at your office?

Yes. Our office at 230 Fort Evans Rd NE, Leesburg, VA 20176 has ample free parking directly in front of the building with convenient, accessible entrance access.

Our team speaks English, Spanish and Arabic. Free onsite parking is available. We accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, JCB, debit cards, checks and NFC/mobile payments. Payment plans are available. Ask our team about terms and insurance coverage before your visit.
